Cultivated Kind Released 1994

A year after the recording of Ponder all the band members were out of High School and enrolled in college most of them majoring in music. The playing ability of all members jumped a tremendous notch from Ponder. Most of the songs on The Cultivated Kind convey a sense of experimentation musically and chemically. The more eclectic influences only briefly explored in Ponder, dominate the recording and the sophomoric humour of the band was raised a notch with this group of songs.

Cultivated Kind features the initial recording of “Week Old Bologna” (later found on the Green Album), “Specifications” a slow sexy funk tune about proper microphone usage, and “Darth Vader'' a fast funk-punk ode to the infamous villain. “Happy Funball” is the most genre mixing song on the demo navigating through ska, punk, jazz and rock. “It’s Your Choice” is a bouncy funk rock tune about one's own decision to recreationally use drugs.

The Cultivated Kind is the next step in the evolution of Who Cares. Even though some of the material was rehashed from their high school years the group was more progressive musically and explored more of their eccentric and eclectic influences. Individually they began to come into their own as players and were finding their sound as a band.
